Mental Illness by Flameshadow117 Mental Illness by Flameshadow117
I've been seeing a ton of stamps telling people: You do not have OCD. You are not depressed. Mental illness isn't as edgy as you think, pretending to be mentally ill isn't trendy, don't claim to be mentally ill unless you were diagnosed by a doctor, etc ad nauseum.

There are people out there who claim to be mentally ill because they think it is edgy. Well, instead of harping on them, and shaming them, can we ask the question: why?

There are people who claim they want a mental illness, who think it would be cool to be schizophrenic. I used to think this way, a long time ago. It would be a unique way to experience reality. We all get bored in our hum-drum lives, so audio and visual hallucinations, on the surface, seem "cool". A mental illness also seems an easy way to avoid culpability for one's actions-- an escape any person might wish for. These are understandable feelings, and only through education, not beratement, will our youth learn to see mental illness in a realistic light. And frankly, is it wrong to view a mental illness in a positive light? Much of the suffering that comes from a mental illness is the social stigma against it.

And then, there are people who have mental illnesses, who have not been diagnosed. They don't know for sure, and maybe they don't want to know. They aren't seeking help for one reason or another-- perhaps accessibility to mental health care, perhaps shame and stigma. However, they may say, "I think I have _____ disorder." Telling these people they don't really have a problem, that they're following a trend or being dramatic, is shaming people who do have a problem, and this shame keeps people from getting diagnosed and treated.

ONE IN FOUR people will be affected by a diagnosable mental illness at some point in their lives. So before you shame someone, before you say, "It's just a fad.", before you tell someone what mental disorder they DON'T have, think about that. One in four. 25%. Those are the chances the person you are addressing really does have a mental illness.

Dismissing people with derogatory labels doesn't help anyone. Having an open discussion and exchange of ideas does. RESPECT people and their reasons for thinking they may be mentally ill, for wanting to be mentally ill, even pretending to be mentally ill. RESPECT people who are coping with serious mental illness-- do your research before you decide a disease is "cool", before deciding a condition is all bad, or all good, before treating someone differently. Remember that, diagnosable condition or not, we're ALL coping with life, and life can be hard. Each of us is an individual, and each of us copes in our own way.

Staying sane is hard, let's all be nice to each other.

Coming from a very mentally ill person, I can NOT stand people that fake mental illness, it's not a joke and it's something I've literally suffered from since I was 8/9. It's awful how people can think it's "cool"?. If I could be a normal functioning person I would be, I'd never wish what I have on others it's horrible, and for people that want to be that way make me sick :( .

The stigma really hurts because it causes people and their families to not seek the help they need. Mental illness like other diseases and conditions seldom get better unless the right treatment is involved.

That being said, I think some people figure it out before they are diagnosed. A lot of the symptoms are recognizable. If you think you have a serious mental illness there is a good chance you do, and that i why you should see a doctor.

i do respect them..
but im just uber worried about my friends and bae having mental illnesses..
im a disorder-free person who wants mental illnesses to just disappear and never come back to people...

whenever my friends' illnesses just start to take over them, i just help the crap out of them by giving advices and not trying to panic..

why would people think mental illnesses are trends?! no they're not, they're really dangerous for our mental health..

my friends talk about their illnesses just makes me want to cry of pure worry..

i just.... why can this world be so sad?

just why do mental illnesses exist..

where do they come from?

why isn't there any cure?

cry

It really is sad when someone thinks they might have a mental illness but aren't able to get the help they need. However, I feel like this is partially due to how a lot of people these days (mostly on Tumblr) will pretend to have a mental illness or want one because they think it's "cool" and "edgy" and different. As someone who's lived with mental illness, I can tell you that it's absolutely horrible and a pain in the ass to deal with.

As a Lesbian girl with autism, I hate how most people think Autism only affects males who are fat, white and straight. There are plenty of Autistic POC.
Including "low-Functioning" east asians.

Agreed. But I do technically support self-dx, only if the person knows what the fuck they're doing instead of looking at webmd symptoms for 2.5 seconds.

I don't trust those who self-diagnose. Fair enough if you think you have depression and get it confirmed by a doctor, but I've seen wayy too many who say they have these mental illnesses "for the lols"

It's a serious issue, and not one to be "used" by these pretenders

You have to self diagnose before you can get help, really. You need to figure out you may have X, so X can get treated.

I don't know how many self diagnosers you've seen but I'm in a server with over 100 people who are self diagnosed. They handle it professionally and have done a lot of research. I am self diagnosed also. My family and me have done a lot of research.

I don't need respect for having a mental illness or for my mental illness. All I need is for the 10 year olds to stop going on google and looking for 2 seconds at their screen just to say "YEP I GOT ANXIETY" or "YEP I HAVE DEPRESSION"

Totally agree! Mental illness is insidious, powerful and often overwhelming. Coping with daily life is often the best one can do. Raising awareness and understanding is SO important!!!!!
